What's Urgent in Balmain Homes, and What Isn't
Some faults want a plumber tonight. Others will sit quietly until morning without costing you anything, and we'll say so on the phone.
Water you can't stop is the line. A burst pipe, a sewer backing up into the lowest fixture, or the smell of gas all mean you ring straight away.
Turn off the water at the meter if you can reach it safely, then ring.
No hot water, a leaking cistern, a toilet you're nursing along with a bucket. These are miserable but not dangerous.
We'll get to them today, and we'll be straight with you on the phone about roughly when.
A dripping outside tap or a slow-draining basin isn't costing you a night's sleep. Book it in and we'll roll it into a normal visit.
That said, a slow drain on the peninsula's century-old lines is worth watching. It rarely gets better on its own.
| Problem | Signs | Do this now | Response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burst pipe | A sudden pressure drop with water where it shouldn't be | Water off at the meter first, then keep clear of any sagging ceiling | Top of the queue, Same Day Service, day or night |
| No hot water | Pilot light out, or a tank dripping into its tray | Leave a leaking unit alone and give us a call | Prioritised by risk, honest timing when you call |
| Stormwater backing up | Gullies overflowing in heavy rain, water pooling against the house | Keep water away from doorways with towels or sandbags if it's safe to | Prioritised during storms, with honest updates when you call |
| Overflowing toilet | One flush away from spilling over the rim | Stop flushing, shut the cistern tap, lay towels down | Treated as urgent, especially where it's the only toilet |
| Blocked sewer backing up | Gurgling drains and waste rising in the lowest fixture | Stop running water and keep everyone away from the overflow | Urgent response, we arrive ready to clear and clean up |
How can we help?
Emergency Plumbing Services We Handle
These seven cover the bulk of our after-hours work. There's a full page behind each heading if you want more detail.
Blocked Drains
Waste backing up, gurgling fixtures, or a drain that's stopped taking water at all. With blocked drains we find where it's stuck before we start clearing.

Hot Water Repairs
Cold showers, a dripping tank, a pilot that won't stay lit. Units wedged into the tight rear courtyards off Mort Street are awkward to reach and quick to fail, so hot water repairs here often mean working in a confined space.

Water Leak Detection
You've got a water bill that's climbed or a damp patch spreading and no idea where it starts. Our water leak detection finds it without demolishing your house.
Learn more
Blocked Toilet
Water rising toward the rim, or the single toilet in a narrow terrace out of action. A blocked toilet jumps the queue.

Burst & Leaking Pipes
Sudden pressure loss, water through a ceiling, a wet wall that keeps getting wetter. We isolate the line, then repair burst and leaking pipes properly.
Learn more
Leaking Tap Repair
A tap that drips all night wastes more than it looks like. Salt air off the harbour is hard on external fittings, so leaking tap repair is steady work around here.

Emergency Gas Leak Repair
If you smell gas, leave the property and call from outside. Safety leads every licensed gas leak repair we attend.

Why Plumbing Fails the Way It Does in Balmain
Balmain's plumbing emergencies come from its age. This is a dense peninsula of Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semi-detached cottages, many of them heritage-listed, and a good number still run the pipework they were built with.
Century-old galvanised and earthenware pipework in these terraces is prone to sudden bursts. Galvanised steel supply lines rust from the inside until the wall thins and gives way, usually without warning.
Then there's what came after the terraces. Gentrification from the 1960s onward brought decades of kitchen and bathroom renovations to the old workers' housing, and those renovations brought flexi hoses.
A flexi hose under a vanity has a service life. When one lets go in a renovated terrace off Beattie Street, it floods at mains pressure until someone finds the meter.
Four faults account for most of our night work on the peninsula:
- Burst galvanised supply lines in pre-1940 terraces, often behind a wall or under a solid floor. Burst and leaking pipes.
- Hot water units failing without warning, crammed into tight courtyards where there's barely room to swing a spanner. Hot water repairs.
- Cracked earthenware sewer lines that let tree roots in from the old plantings along the peninsula's streets. Blocked drains.
- Flexi hoses bursting under renovated kitchens and bathrooms, usually while nobody's home.
Around Darling Street and the streets running off it toward Elkington Park, the housing stock is old enough that we plan for the worst pipe rather than the best one.

Why Balmain Picks Us as Their Trusted Choice
Balmain is a mix of long-held family homes and apartment conversions, with owners and renters in roughly even measure. Mid-emergency, though, every one of them wants the same two things: a straight answer and a fair price.
Two separate guarantees, not one blurred together. Quality Workmanship Guaranteed covers how the job's done, the Lifetime Labour Warranty covers how long it lasts.
Neither promise has a catch buried in it. A callback under warranty costs you nothing and gets treated with the same urgency as the first visit.
Fair, upfront pricing, no surprises, settled and approved well before either guarantee is ever needed.
Backed by 15+ years' experience. These guarantees carry more weight from a crew that's been at this a long time.
$0 Call Out Fee to start the conversation. The guarantees apply from the first job onward.
How the Callout Works
The van heading to you already carries what most jobs need. Fittings, valves, seals and hot water parts, not just a clipboard.
That means the diagnosis and the fix can happen the same visit. We'll tell you exactly what's wrong and the best way to fix it, then we're often already equipped to do it.
Fair, upfront pricing, no surprises, covers parts and labour together. One figure, agreed before we start.
Most jobs are solved in one call-out, not two. Quality Workmanship Guaranteed on the finished repair.
Most emergency callouts on the peninsula are finished before we leave.
What Balmain's Streets Tell a Plumber
There's a sandstone spine down the middle of the peninsula, and the land drops hard toward the harbour either side of it. That shape decides how the drainage behaves in a downpour.
Sydney's intense summer storms drop a lot of water very quickly onto rock and shale that doesn't absorb much. The runoff concentrates on the slopes, and the old drainage below carries more than it was ever sized for.
Down near the harbour edge, low-lying streets and stormwater outlets can surcharge in heavy rain, and a king tide makes it worse. That's when gullies overflow and water starts pooling against the back of the house.
The salt air is the slower version of the same problem. With water on three sides of the peninsula, outdoor taps and fittings corrode faster here than they would a few kilometres inland, so one that seemed fine in autumn can be seized or weeping by spring.

300+ five-star reviews
Real jobs, real homes, re-told with permission. Names are first names only.
We've got 300+ five-star reviews across Sydney, and most of them came from someone's worst plumbing day.
That's the only kind of proof we put much weight on. Not an ad, not a slogan, just people who rang a stranger at a bad moment and were glad they did.
You'll find the same team behind every one of them. We don't cut corners, whether it's a full day's work or a quick tighten of a fitting.

The Local Crew You'll Actually Meet
The director is on the tools here, and the team is small enough that your job isn't passed down a list. Whoever picks up knows what's happening on the road that night.
Both trades sit in-house, licensed & insured, water + gas, under NSW plumbing licence #292427C. A gas fault doesn't leave you waiting on a second contractor's diary.
Somebody is on the phones through the night, every night, so ringing at three in the morning gets you a human voice rather than a recording. More about us.
Good questions, straight answers
Balmain Plumbing FAQs
Short answers to what people ask us most before they book. Ring (02) 9140 0159 if yours isn't here.
Can I check your licence and insurance?
Yes, and we'd rather you did. We hold NSW plumbing licence #292427C, licensed & insured for water + gas, and we'll show you at the door before anyone touches a tap.
What happens if the fault comes back after you've fixed it?
You ring us and we come back, and a warranty callback costs you nothing. Quality Workmanship Guaranteed covers how the repair was done, with a Lifetime Labour Warranty behind the labour.
Do you handle blocked drains as an emergency?
We do, when waste is rising or the drain has stopped taking water. Balmain's old earthenware and clay lines crack and take roots, so a slow gurgle can turn into a backed-up sewer overnight.
My toilet is blocked. Can you come today?
Yes, that's a today job. A blocked toilet climbs the priority list where a narrow Balmain terrace has just the one bathroom to its name.
I can smell gas at home. What now?
Leave the property and call from outside, and do not flick switches or light flames. Once you're clear of the house, give us a ring and a licensed gas plumber will be sent out.
How soon can you be at my Balmain home?
Usually the same day you ring, right across the peninsula, and the phones stay staffed overnight. Call (02) 9140 0159 and we'll give you an honest read on how the day is stacking up.
